Experimenting with ice

Each winter, I stop to look at every puddle and pond I pass to see what the ice looks like. This is because ice is an especially fascinating subject for nature photography—each patch is different in terms of its abstract patterns, and with the changing weather, ephemeral. During the winter of 2024, we decided to start experimenting with creating ice at home in our backyard on days with especially cold weather.

While the photos on this page are not fully natural, I see them as a collaboration with nature, as the cold temperatures of winter and natural light were both essential ingredients. You can read more about our ice experimentation here. As we expanded our methods, Jennifer Renwick generously shared a few tips that were quite helpful, too.
